November marks the beginning of the Bald Eagle viewing season along Coeur d'Alene Lake. They feed off of spawning Kokanee Salmon. These pictures were taken from aboard a Cd'A Resort cruise boat. They offer sight seeing trips up the lake for just this purpose. I was a chaperon for a school field trip and got to take the cruise for free. There is another way to see them for FREE though. Drive east from Cd'A on Interstate 90 - take Exit 22, the Wolf Lodge Exit - and start keeping your eyes peeled! Drive south on Highway 97 - the next 3 miles should provide you with plenty of opportunity to see these magnificent American treasures. Look for their white heads contrasting in the green trees or see them taking flight over the water. FYI, the immature, younger eagles do not yet have the white head feathers which makes them a little harder to spot.
Happy Eagle watching!
Did you know that Benjamin Franklin campaigned for the turkey to be our national bird? That may have changed the way we celebrate Thanksgiving, huh?
*Travism: "The American bird shouldn't be a scavenger or a dumb turkey. It should have been like a Paul Bunyan Bird. You know like a bird that could chop word or attack deer."
